Before the fi rst world war Finland and many other parts of the world witnessed unprecedented economic growth and transformation of society. Things were changing and the wheels of industry and trade were turning at a rate that had never been seen before. Social change was evidenced by Finnish women getting their right to vote as the fi rst women in Europe and the second in the world. D&I rode on this wave of change. The demand for legal services grew, especially within commercial law. It cannot have been easy for John and Emmanuel to think ahead in such times of fast transformation. I guess that is why they teamed up with some of the most important names in Finnish economic life and developed their services to be relevant for the growing Finnish industry. Looking at the pace of change in the early 20th century from today’s perspective, is like looking at an old steam train from a modern passenger jet. While change has never been as fast as it is now, it will never again be as slow as it is today. The pace of change is constantly accelerating. The kind of changes that used to take decades, may now happen in months. Digitalisation is a magical tool changing so much of what we lawyers do and how we do it. In these times of accelerating change it is not easy to think ahead. We cannot see what the future may bring to the legal industry, but we do know that information will keep on getting more accessible and that artifi cial intelligence will play a role in the provision of legal advice. Nevertheless, I am convinced that for a long period going forward, we lawyers will have an important role to play. The challenge already today is not that the contents of the law and market practice wouldn’t be available to our clients. The thing is that our clients do not have the time and resources to analyse what it means for them. Our role is to monitor the huge wave of change in regulation and best practices, simplify what it means to our clients and present it in a form that is easy to access and comprehend. At the same time not everyone can be an expert in any given area of the law and follow and analyse all the developments in market practice. It brings effi ciencies to concentrate such expertise to dedicated persons and to share such resources. That is what we at law fi rms are: shared resources of our clients in areas where it just isn’t meaningful for everyone to develop their own expertise. And that is why it is so important for us to be close to our clients - to have a constant dialogue on what type of resources and services our clients will need going forward. … and that is why it is so important for us to be thinking ahead for our clients. Jan Ollila, Senior Partner @JanOllila QUARTERLY Q/4 – 2019 D&I 120th Anniversary Dinner 120 YEARS OF THINKING AHEAD On Thursday 24th October 2019 we celebrated our first 120 years with 120 guests. During the night we enjoyed one-time-only performances reflecting the past, the present and the future. P6-120 Years of Thinking Ahead- Anniversary Dinner The journey from 1899 to today is long. The world has suffered two world wars, Finland has evolved from a grand duchy into a member of the European Union and the country’s economy has developed from a strongly regulated and protected market into one of the world’s most open economies. D&I too has changed. We have developed from an offi ce kept open only a few hours a day into a modern, globally respected law fi rm. In 1966 we got our fi rst IBM typewriter (with an ultramodern “correcting ribbon”!), today we use MyD&I, a digital platform for effi cient, transparent collaboration, in all our client work. Our position as a servant of the Finnish business, however, has remained surprisingly similar. Indeed, our fi rst 120 years have been an inseparable part of the history of the Finnish economy. Some clients of ours have stayed with us for more than 80 years. #120stories is our internal code for every second Wednesday each month. As part of celebrating our 120th Anniversary within the fi rm, we gather together once a month for a cup of coffee and for ten historical D&I stories, adding up to 120 stories by the end of this year. Diving into the life at a law fi rm during the early 20th century has been interesting. In building the next 120 years, we make new stories with our clients everyday. We are thinking ahead. #120stories QUARTERLY Q/4 – 2019 ACT I · 2139 TEAM “Culture of Collaboration” The first act of the night was a unique spectacle of skill, will and elegance by the three time synchronized skating World Champions, Helsinki Rockettes. The skaters mesmerised the crowd by doing their performance on rollerskates - not something they normally do! The Rockettes on rolls, represented the future. Team before individual is one of D&I’s cultural cornerstones. We believe that when we put the team first, everything else falls into place. Our Culture of Collaboration will carry us through towards the upcoming years. In the beginning everything is new. What becomes a classic, we don’t know. Sometimes, all it takes is the courage to change the sacred. But even when we put everything in play, adhering the values that are important to us, we can’t predict the future. “-120 Years of Thinking Ahead- There is no “I” in team. We value teamplaying efforts more than individual scores. However, much like the most beautiful star constellations in the Northern sky, legendary winning teams are rarely made without star individuals. “Next >
